The South Korean violinist Soyoung Yoon always receives a very enthusiastic reaction when playing in Łódź. The music enthusiasts appreciate her brilliant virtuosity, effortless lightness and elegance. During the beginnings of her career, the artist received several awards in competitions such as the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists and the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels. However, her biggest success was winning the XIVth International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań (2011). The program of this Soyoung Yoon concert focuses on lesser-known Polish music. The body of work of Mieczysław Wajnberg, a Polish Jew born in Warsaw who spent most of his life in the USSR, has just recently gained popularity. His Concertino for violin and orchestra from 1948 combines a nostalgic mood with lively, dancing character taken from the Jewish folk music and tradition. Just a couple of years later, we saw the premiere of the Poem for violin and orchestra by Szymon Laks, another Warsaw citizen with Jewish roots, who, through the turns of fate, happened to end up in the opposite direction from Poland – in Paris. His body of work remains influenced by French neoclassical music. The program will also include Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major also known as “The Great”, which is often considered his best piece.
At 6:15 PM we invite you to the Henryk Czyż Chamber hall for a pre-concert meeting led by Marcin Majchrowski.
