The elegant and distinguished music of France is an excellent choice for the last symphony concert of the calendar year. The evening will start with the short and charming “Pavane for a Dead Princess” by Maurice Ravel. Moved by the portraits of the Spanish princess Margarita Teresa painted by Diego Velázquez, the composer was inspired to create a modernised version of the court dance. The sounds of nature inspired Claude Debussy to create the three-part symphonic composition entitled ”The Sea”. As it is usually with Debussy, there is no precisely planned scheme for the piece; it is an attempt at conveying a certain mood – an impression. ”The musician is to hear the gentlest sounds and whispers of nature, use tones to capture the impressions that the surrounding life invokes: the splash of raindrops, the overwhelming atmosphere of a southern night, the reflections of light on water” wrote Debussy. The Organ Concerto by Francis Poulenc invokes the least direct associations. This neoclassical composer played with conventions by combining elements of baroque, classical and contemporary music. The pipe organ will be played by Karol Mossakowski, an artist living in France and the resident organ player at the Paris Saint-Sulpice Church.
